Thursday 23rd May – Anthony Tom Morris, farmer and historian. ‘Garibaldi: Hero of the free world and common man’. Learn how this General of Sicily united various Kingdom’s and Fiefdom’s to form the nation of Italy. We are looking forward to learning more about this slice of continental history.

Thursday 13th June – John Phillips. ‘The wood carvings of Beverley Minster in the Middle Ages’. Please join us to learn more about these intriguing carvings.

Date To Be Confirmed – David Haldenby, Amateur Archaelogist & Metal Detectorist. ‘The evolution of a Saxon site on the Wolds at Cottam and the arrival of the Vikings. The Saxon site at Cowlam and the discovery of the Bronze Age hoard.

All our talks are usually held at Market House (Driffield Community Cinema), Exchange Street (half way down next to Yorkshire Building Society), Driffield

Start time:  7.15pm for 7.30pm. Finishing time approximately 9.30pm


2019 Social/Fundraising Events

All trips/days out are open to anyone. You don’t need to be a member of the Society. As well as learning about history our meet ups are also an opportunity to socialise and have fun.

Thursday 1st August – Summer Fundraising Street Stall at Driffield street market. Come along and meet members of the Committee.

Sunday 18th August, 11am – Burton Agnes Hall. As well as visiting the grounds, we are also planning a tour of the house. The Society will fund the £1 house tour fee for members who wish to participate. Entry fee £11 (£10.50 concessions).

Possible trip to Holmpton Nuclear Bunker, Hornsea. Yes it sounds grim but I’ve been assured its fascinating. Date to be confirmed.

Autumn. The committee is looking at a possible trip to Bruges or Ypres.


2018 Talks

12th July – Talk by Marcus Ramshaw  – ‘Pilgrimage and popular piety in Medieval Yorkshire‘. An extra talk slotted in to our schedule, postponed from last year.


13th September – AGM followed by a short talk by Dr Ruth Beckett. ‘Monks, Malefactor’s and Men at Arms: Kirby Underdale and the wider world’. Dr Beckett is a lecturer at the University of York lifelong learning centre and a researcher into the literary and spiritual history of Yorkshire and medieval pilgrimage in York.  She writes for the ‘Driffield and Wolds Weekly’ each month, exploring newspaper archives to tell about the history of 19th century Driffield and the surrounding villages.

11th October – Talk by Marcus Ramshaw- ‘King Henry V – Agincourt, Bridlington and Beverley. This talk is about who helped Henry win his greatest victory and why.  Marcus is  a former Tutor, Fellow and Chaplain of Downing College, Cambridge.  Graduate of St. Andrews, York and Durham Universities

8th November – Talk by Steven Thomas ‘A Field in TIme Through Thirty Objects’. Steven is a local Farmer.

13th December – Talk by Kath and Clive Richardson – ‘The Woman Who Didn’t Exist’An exceptional opportunity to hear about the incredible, true story of Margaret Burns – a ‘Spell Binding Story’. Their book will be available to buy.
